Crystals

Thanks to Charles Bliley, K3NAU, for the crystal history and vintage crystal information at www.bliley.net which was very useful while listing many of this page's items. The 1937 General Products Catalog G-9 crystal and holder information, in particular, was useful and Crystal Grinding Without Tears reminded me of reading about this in the 50's and something I've always wanted to try. Other interesting and/or useful pages found while listing these items were: Shifting Crystals, Crystal Grinding, another Crystal Grinding page, Crystal & Crystal Holder Information and another Crystal Holder Information page.

1.0 MHz OCXO
(oven controlled crystal oscillator)
Lavoie Labs Inc.  K00000113
with an insulated enclosure.

115 Volt30W75°C

HUPP − Garlisle PA − 273C is also printed on the unit.

Unable to find a data sheet, I reversed engineered the unit and will supply the schematic with the unit. The oven was tested and works fine, but I have no way to test the crystal. Chances are that it is fine, but if had gone as far as to build up an oscillator circuit to test the crystal I may as well keep and use this item myself.

4 of these filters are Snelgrove PES-00599 and have 'L5' printed on the bottom, 1 is a Cathodeon filter and 1 is an ITT.
They were all received packaged together and I'm assuming that they are all basically the same thing and have the
same specifications as the ITT filter.

Polylithic Crystal Filters
from telephone carrier equipment

1 of each size was opened to help determine what these are. I'll try to test and find their center frequency, band width, etc., but until I do, or someone sends me this information, buy them for something interesting to test & use, for the gold, or whatever.

Top:  Qty: 7   #083-00628-05
1" dia. x 1/2"
Freq: 8.143825 MHz
B.W. ≈ 75 Hz

Bottom:  Qty: 4  #083-00336
Qty: 3  #083-00635
1" dia. x 7/8"
B.W. is 4 kHz with very sharp response
Freq Stability is < ±35 Hz from 0° - 50°C

Input, Output and
2 ground pins.

An authority on crystals with much better equipment then I'll ever have access to reported that the bandwidth of the upper unit is 75 Hz and that "It clearly has quite a bit of hand assembly and must have been quite expensive. It appears to be a 4-pole, 1-zero filter and is constructed using two 2-pole monolithic filters and four capacitors with a gold plated shield between the two monolithic filters". The larger 5 section filters were used with the smaller ones so likely the same frequency and consist of 3 coupled resonator pairs & 2 single resonators. A article on such filters says the typical freq stability is less then ±35 Hz from 0° to 50°C, bandwidth is 4 kHz, frequency response is extremely sharp and spurious responses are 70 dB below the passband level.
